Bead Soup off to Luxembourg...

For this year's Bead Soup Blog Party I have been partnered with Maryse Fritzsch-Thillens of Glass Bead Art, a very talented lampworker from Luxembourg. I've just sent my soup parcel off to Maryse so I obviously can't show you it in all it's glory but here's a little tease just to get you thinking...

I made most of this mix myself so I do hope she likes it...

Maryse makes the most wonderful organic beads and I can't wait to get my parcel from Luxembourg and see what she's sent me. If they're half as beautiful as these examples of her work I'll be more than happy...

You can see more of Maryse's work at her Etsy shop and find out more about her from her blog.

Once my parcel has arrived at its destination I'll be back to show you what I sent Maryse and maybe give you a peek at the beads I received before I start working with them.

See you then.

7th Bead Soup Blog Party - 3rd Reveal...

Welcome to the third and final reveal of the 2013 Bead Soup Blog party. Here's a reminder of the fabulous soup mix I received from my partner Silke Grober from Germany who, as you can see makes gorgeous lampwork beads. Silke was incredibly generous sending me not one, but three of her own focals as a matching set and some spacers along with some lovely brass and Rudraksha beads - thank you so much Silke for sending me ingredients that were such a pleasure to work with. I certainly had plenty to play with so I'll get on with it and show you what I made.

I love the earthiness of Silke's beads and they remind me a little of aerial landscapes, autumn seasons and for some reason vineyards. The first piece I made is this necklace using the 'elongated bicone' focal (not sure what the proper name for this shape is) set on a hand made bronze pin and bail.

I particularly like the dark plummy accents on the focal and wanted to try and pick this up in some way so I dug out some lovely matte peanut and seed beads from Smitten Beads and strung them with some of the accent beads from the soup. The Rudraksha beads and the gorgeous brass filigrees add a lovely warmth and although It's a fairly traditional design I think it's very pleasing to the eye.

Next I wanted to do something which incorporated the copper clasp Silke had made which I felt was crying out for a bracelet. I decided to go asymmetrical and fairly casual and went for Waxed linen for the stringing material, randomly adding beads from the soup mix along with a few of my own bronze discs.

I finished the cord tails off with some more of the peanuts beads and that was it - simple but effective.

For my next piece I chose the round focal bead which is probably my favourite but it is rather large so it took some thinking about. In the end I decided on a very long necklace with simple accents to show of the full beauty of the focal. The chunky Vintaj chain is interspersed with lovely sea green crystals (again from Smitten Beads) and both these elements are repeated as dangles below the focal.

I also added one of my bronze flying birds as a dangle and a few matte and shiny peanut beads to the bail to highlight the colour on the focal. This piece did prove somewhat difficult to photograph clearly but I hope you can get an idea.

Last but not least, I used a couple of the smaller lampwork beads to make some earrings which will go with any of the other pieces. The beads are wrapped in bronze wire with a length of chain suspended from the bottom. I added some more peanut beads ( can you tell I rather like these peanuts...) to small jump rings and attached these to the entire length of the chain and finished off with the sea green crystals. These have a lovely sense of movement and texture and I liked them so much I've made some similar styles since.

All pieces now in my ETSY Shop.

I still have 1 focal, the silk and a few beads left so there will be more to come but for now that is my serving of bead soup - I'm so excited to see what Silke has done with the beads in the picture below which I sent her and I hope you will pop over to her blog too and take a look.

I'd also like to offer  a huge vote of thanks to Lori Anderson and her helpers for organising yet another epic event and being a huge inspiration to us all.

Have fun!

Full of Flavour and Nicely Spiced...Soup's here!

I don't usually do two posts in one day but my bead soup arrived today and I just can't wait until tomorrow to share it with you. Just look at all those gorgeous little packages - I actually made myself a cup of tea and sat and looked at them for a while...and then I ripped into them!

If you don't know Jen Cameron, she is a glass artist who makes amazing lampwork beads and uses them in her own jewellery designs. She's also a very clever lady because she's put together a soup that combines items that are right up my street, with things I've never used (and in some cases don't know how to use) and are going to challenge me big time. That really excites me and I can't wait to dive into the unknown.

Unsurprisingly there was too much in those little packages to get into one shot and anyway, you'll want more than one spoon of this tasty soup - so how's this for starters...

Not one, not two, but four gorgeous lampwork focal beads and one of Jen's 'lampworkified' keys. I love earthy organic beads and these are no exception and that key, well that's a fun challenge I'm really looking forward to. Then we have a good handful of colourful enamelled beads, again by Jen, Czech glass beads, Vintaj chain and yes, some Sari silk. From our e mail exchanges, Jen and I discovered that we had quite a lot in common one of which was finding Sari silk hard to work with. We both love it in other peoples work but always think it looks awful in our own. So she's set me another challenge here and since I noticed that she used it very successfully herself in a challenge piece last weekend, I guess I'm just going to have to rise to that!

Here's a better look at those lush focals...

I somehow managed to miss these lovely little pearls when I took that first picture.

And now we come to the unknown element, the materials I've never worked with and design styles I have never attempted - Steam Punk, found objects and vintage...where these are concerned I know nothing but I'm so looking forward to changing that.

So here we have my lovely vintage crystal clasp, some big wooden buttons, a glass vial, Steam Punk gears in wood and metal, vintage Swarovski flowers, Mica sheets and washer beads, some cute little brass star beads, a Washington DC bus token and a vintage fabric measuring tape. I am a little nervous when I look at these...the only thing I've ever done with a Mica sheet is slump glass on it but as I said, there is a certain frisson of excitement at the thought of working with materials I have no preconceptions of and the freedom that entails.

So there you have my bead soup with all it's depth of flavour. This will be sitting on my worktable for the rest of the week and hopefully sparking my imagination until next week when the fun will begin.

This parcel got to me in the UK from Indiana in just 4 days and hopefully Jen's soup will arrive with her soon too. If she likes it half as much as I do this - I'll be very happy.

Soup's still bubbling away...

Well it's Friday tomorrow which means it's almost a week since the Bead Soup Blog Party and I'm still feasting on the wonderful dishes that were served up. I spent a lot of last weekend hopping and although I've had to step back this week I fully intend to complete the task this coming weekend.

Julie Nordines design with my focal
In my opinion the whole thing has been a resounding  success, largely due to the efforts of the indefatigable  Lori Anderson...I'm sure if I'd been running it there would be bodies strewn in my wake!!

This was my first BSBP and I've been delighted by the exceptional standard of workmanship and the level and variety of creativity I've seen. It's also been hugely inspirational for me to see a little of other peoples creative processes. There are lots of ideas, not designs or anything like that, but little bits pieces here and there that I've made a note of and will be trying out for myself - so thanks to everyone who supplied those!

I'd also like to give a big shout out for Julie my bead soup partner for the amazing job she did with the beads I sent her. I felt so proud to see something I'd made used in such a creative way - she did stunning job and as for that 90 inches of lariat...I think she should get an award for bead endurance!

And all it's glorious 90"!
But now it's time to think about the next Bead Soup Blog Party in 2012. This time it will be run on a lottery basis so there's no guarantee of a spot but, I for one will getting my name down and keeping my fingers crossed...that should make for interesting beading!

To find out more about it just hop over to Lori's blog

In the meantime you can find my Bead Soup creations here.

Bye for now.

Bead Soup Reveal - Lets get this party started!

Well it seems like a long time ago now since we found out who our Bead Soup Blog Party partners were and began swapping beads across 5 continents and 21 countries but finally the time for the big reveal has arrived. 362 reveals to be precise so this is going to be something of a marathon blog hop and whether you're reading this on day 1 or day 31, I hope you enjoy it and all the other ports of call along the way.

Before I show you what I've been up to here's a quick reminder of what my partner Julie Nordine sent me - a fabulous collection of lampwork and etched copper focals, Vintaj Brass, Silk Ribbon and assorted delicious beads...

The aim of the Bead Soup party is to stretch yourself by doing something different from your norm and whilst I do work a lot with Lampwork, Julie's selections weren't without their challenges for me. I'm a 'less is more' kind of person when it comes to jewellery design and my default setting for focals as beautiful as the three Julie sent me, is to hang them simply from a gorgeous chain or cord and let them speak for themselves - after all, who am I to try and improve such great work? For the purpose of this exercise however, that would make this stop on the blog hop pretty boring!

Akin to this is my use of fabric and textiles - or rather the lack of it. Other than using it as a straightforward hanging mechanism, I never really know what to do with fabric. I'm not that great with small beads either - I tend to use them as spacers or accents on earrings and that's about it.

When I set to creating these were the things I wanted to try and address along with one other that constantly alludes me - asymmetrical design which I love in other peoples work but, try as I might my brain always wants more order.

So let's get on with the show then shall we... As they were themed, my first inclination was to use all of the focals together in one piece, but I started to have so many ideas for each element that I decided to use them individually to create three separate pieces. The first of these is a necklace called 'Wood Nymph' which includes the etched copper oak leaf pendant and Vintaj chain and findings from my soup mix.

It's perhaps inevitable that one would think of woodland when working with oak leaves and acorns, but there's something about Julie's beads that quickly had me thinking about enchanted forests, fairies and things of that ilk - and that's not something I'm predisposed to by the way.

The weight of the focal on this necklace is held by a double rope of size 8 seed beads interspersed and linked with brass jump rings. The colouring on these is quite subtle and difficult to capture on camera but they are iridescent green and gold with pink flashes. The chain gives a decorative swag to the piece and the lovely gossamer light (detachable) silk ribbons from SowZere Designs add an ethereal, feminine touch that I imagine a Wood Nymph would have.

The inspiration for my next piece was a childhood memory that came to me when I first started shuffling the beads around to see what the possibilities were. The turquoise nuggets and the white pearls kept making me think of blue skies and fluffy white clouds and then as I shuffled, the tiny ivory acorn rolled into the mix and it hit me - sky and acorns can only mean one thing... So who remembers the children's tale of Chicken Licken (or Chicken Little depending where you hail from) who thought the sky was falling in when an acorn fell on her head...?

This piece is a bracelet which I've called 'The Sky never Fell" and in addition to the mini acorn focal, turquoise nuggets and pearls from the mix, I've added Vintaj rings and a clasp.

This bracelet has actually achieved quite a feat in as much as I rarely make and never wear bracelets with lots of little dangles on them because after about 10 minutes, all that jangling drives me nuts and I have to take it off. This one however has barely been off my wrist since I finished it - I just love it! The pearls tumble about in a soft, fluid fashion with the movement of the wrist and It feels very feminine - something else I don't do!

Now for my last piece... which turned out nothing like my original plan and is the one that gave me the most headaches - yes, it's the asymmetric one. I still can't quite get my head round this -  I think it works but that wire in my brain is still sending out sparks every now and then. Returning to my enchanted forest theme I've called this one 'Titania' after the queen of the fairies in 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' - hopefully it won't be "ill met by moonlight..."!

Here I've combined the large acorn focal, Vintaj clasp and silk ribbon from the mix with a matching Vintaj ring and chain from my collection. I've connected two lengths of chain with the tiny glass beads Julie sent me to create a broader chain which mirrors and balances the ribbon on the opposite side and I guess, sort of satisfies my need for symmetry...

Well, I've had a great time being part of this Blog Party - I've used up the vast majority of my soup mix and I think I've managed to meet the challenges I set myself. These pieces are very different from my usual style - a little more theatrical perhaps and I'm really pleased that I managed to achieve something different. It did feel a little odd at times but the whole point about being out of your comfort zone is that it's, well, uncomfortable -  but the stretch feels good.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and I hope you enjoyed the post - I'd love to hear what you think about my designs...Don't forget to hop over to Julie's blog to see what she's done with the goodies I sent her and then you can find the rest of the Bead Soup Party  participants in the list below. thanks again Julie for sending me such great ingredients to work with.

Finally I'd like to thank Lori Anderson and her helpers for the time and effort that has gone into making this a truly memorable event - well done Lori and three cheers for you!

Happy hopping!

Lesley
